Topps Star Wars Galaxy 7
Our box of Galaxy 7 cards was waiting at the door last night and, while watching “Archer,” we broke into it!
The base set is 110 cards (originally advertised at 120) and there are several levels of chase. We put together a full base set and then had some duplicates, but the collation was pretty good as there doesn’t appear to be triples of any base cards.
Standard for the Galaxy sets, there’s a 6-piece Etched Foil set that, when put together, forms a larger image. This set’s Etched Foil artwork is by Joe Corroney and Brian Miller. We pulled 4 of the 6 cards without any duplicates, which is right on the money as they’re a 1:6 ratio.
There are three sets of 15 foil parallel cards; silver, bronze and gold. The artwork this time around is by Mark McHaley. We pulled 8 silver foils, no duplicates, and one each bronze and gold. That was actually pretty good with the bronze at 1:24 and gold at 1:48.
Each hobby box is guaranteed one sketch card and ours was by Brian DeGuire. It’s a nice, fully painted card, but it’s just of an eye. General Grievous, apparently. We’ve seen worse, but it’s kind of anticlimactic.
The higher ratio chase cards for this series include Foil Refractor Parallels (1:16,096), 1/1 Original Etched Foil Artwork (1:40,240), 1/1 Base Card Print Plates (1:1080) and Sketchagraphs (1:230). Unfortunately, none of those showed up in our box.
The base set has some nice artwork in it from fan favorites such as Russ Walks, Jerry Vanderstelt, Joe Corroney, Tom Hodges and Dave Dorman. Two that we liked by Steven Chorney feature Sabé, who was played by Keira Knightley in The Phantom Menace. There’s also an excellent Darth Maul by Brian Rood and we love McHaley’s foil Maul.
There is a big chunk of the base set dedicated to prints that were released at Celebration V and by Mondo Press, and a couple of pieces by Acme Archives. It’s artwork we’ve all seen and it would be nice if Topps cut some of this out to give more room for original artwork exclusive to the card set. There wasn’t much info released on the Topps website about this site but there doesn’t appear to be a binder this time around. We’ll be on the lookout for the retail release and if there are any bonus boxes available, we’ll definitely pick up a couple of those.
If you are a fan of the Galaxy series of cards, you should be happy with this set. We haven’t found any printing mistakes and the quality of the cards themselves is excellent. The art is crisp and bright and the collation on the base set was excellent.
