NYCC: Topps
The Topps booth at New York Comic Con was rather small and they weren’t selling any product at the show, but they did have a few interesting things in their case for display.
Lately Topps has been pushing their Garbage Pail Kids lines and they had several binders and cards to look at. Mars Attacks was also represented while the only Star Wars items on display consisted of boxes of Jedi Legacy and Galactic Files 2 plus a couple sketch cards from the upcoming Illustrated release.
What was more interesting was the news that a Widevision 3D release for Return of the Jedi is on tap for 2014. While Rebel Scum is reporting that the release will be an online exclusive, the person we spoke with could not confirm that. We did find out not to expect any Star Wars binders in the near future as Topps has chosen to focus more on their own brands where the profit margin is more in their favor.
When asked about the printing plate sets that Topps sold for the first Galactic Files series, we learned that they didn’t sell as well as hoped. The price was high based partly on the cost of the box presentation and because the people in charge of setting the price felt that printing plates were highly desirable based on the secondary market for previous releases. Unfortunately, not all cards are created equal when it comes to chase cards and premium releases.
Now that Disney has purchased Lucasfilm, we asked if Topps felt comfortable with their future as a license holder and were told that they had no thoughts that they would lose it any time soon. A fun piece of trivia that was pointed out is that Topps is the longest continuous Star Wars license holder, they’ve been with the franchise from the beginning.
It seems safe to say that they’ll be around for the upcoming sequel films and well into the future.
