Hasbro and Disney Expand Partnership
Now that Lucasfilm has been purchased by Disney, two of Hasbro’s largest licensed properties are owned by the same company, Marvel and Star Wars. Last year Hasbro extended their original license with Lucasfilm by adding two years, taking it out to 2020. With their latest agreement, the Marvel license is also good until 2020.
According to yesterday’s press release, the Marvel deal will guarantee $80 million in royalties while the Star Wars side of the deal will run Hasbro an estimated $225 million. That includes $75 million at signing and additional payments on the release of the sequels beginning in 2015.
Hasbro’s original license with Lucasfilm, including the extension until 2018, cost around $505 million plus royalties. With this newest plan, Hasbro approaches three quarters of a billion dollars in guaranteed payouts for Star Wars.
