Disney Confirms Spinoff Movies
A couple of days ago, Harry Knowles over at Ain’t It Cool News posted an article that Disney was looking to do standalone films in the Star Wars universe, movies that would be separate from the Saga films which will kick off with Episode VII. First up, according to Knowles, would be a film about Yoda.
While a Yoda film hasn’t been confirmed, StarWars.com did post a confirmation of the standalone movies yesterday. Disney’s chairman, Bob Iger, confirmed that Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg, who are also consulting on Episode VII, are each working on their own screenplays. With two movies planned for now, it seems that additional films could be a go in the future if they’re a success.
While a Yoda film would be interesting, we once again have to bring up Joe Johnston’s pitch for a Boba Fett movie. How awesome would that be, with Kasdan writing and Johnston directing? Besides Yoda, a Jabba the Hutt movie has also been mentioned, with George Lucas himself being named as the originator of that story.
Something to keep in mind is that nothing has been said about these movies being live action and since Disney is famous for it’s animation, could we be looking at one or more of these films being done by Lucasfilm Animation or even Pixar? Who wouldn’t be in line for a Dave Filoni directed, Pixar animated, feature film?
No matter which direction these movies may take, there are definitely a lot of characters in the Star Wars universe that could be the centerpiece; Boba Fett, Yoda, Jabba, Darth Maul or maybe an animated film about R2-D2 and C-3PO. We can’t speak for the rest of you, but the possibilities for these films have us more excited than Episode VII right now.
