Notes
The Saga Legends line debuted in April 2007 alongside the 30th Anniversary Collection. All of the figures intended for the line are straight re-packs of previously released figures pulled from all lines up to and including The Saga Collection from 2006.
This page relies heavily on abbreviations for previous lines of figures.
2007
The 2007 and early 2008 packaging was similar in design to the 30th Anniversary Collection packaging and the assortment number was 85770. Each figure came with a collector coin (see the Coins section for details). The last three waves of figures included approximately 16 figures carrying a “Fans’ Choice” sticker on the bubble and were chosen by a vote carried out on RebelScum.com. This Saga Legends run had unnumbered figures and was noteworthy for the number of running changes included. Most notable were the Sandtrooper variants, Pit Droid 2-packs and the AOTC Clone Troopers which cycled through the ranks from Sergeant to Commander. The Battle Droid 2-packs also had varying color schemes while the Imperial Officer changed head sculpts.
2008
In 2008 the Saga Legends program continued with the July introduction of the blue and white Stormtrooper packaging. The assortment number for the line changed to 87995 and, unlike the previous releases, the figures were numbered with an “SL” prefix. The pack-in for the new Saga Legends line was a cardboard “locker” filled with six weapons (see the Clone Gear section for details). Many of the characters available in asst 85770 were carried forward but some were changed to different figure versions. Most of the running changes were dropped for this series, but the AOTC Clone
Troopers were available in all rank colors and the Battle Droids came in two color schemes.
2009
Saga Legends continued in 2009, making the switch to a new card back shape and featured an orange stripe along the top and background bubble insert to differentiate them from the Clone Wars line which used red highlights. The insert does not mention the Clone Gear lockers, but they are included. The assortment number remained the same but the numbering scheme started over with SL-01. The figures included in the 2009 wave were a mix of previously released Legends, some with new numbering, and new characters such as Chewbacca and Han Solo. The 2009 listing is not broken out by waves as all figures were seemingly in rotation in the case packs.
2010
In August 2010, Saga Legends moved to the new Shadows of the Dark Side packaging. The shape of the card backs was similar to the 2009 packaging, but removed some of the die cuts. The assortment number for the new SL line was 21115. Hasbro kept the weapons pack-in, now called “Secret Weapons” (see the Secret Weapons section for details), and added the Galactic Battle Game (see Galactic Battle Game for details). Each figure included a game card, stand and die in order to play. The Galactic Battle Game cards were included with Clone Wars action figures and most Battle Packs and Class I vehicles as well. In July of 2011, Hasbro added a new selection of figures to the Saga Legends mix. The assortment number stayed the same but the Secret Weapons were dropped at that point.
Errors
Figures from 2007/2008 Saga Legends Wave 3 and 4 should come with a “Fans’ Choice” sticker on the bubble. Some were found without the sticker, others with the spelling “Fan’s Choice” and then with the corrected sticker, “Fans’ Choice.”
In 2009, Chewbacca was released as SL-15. The initial shipment of this figure was based on the Legacy Collection BD-03 figure, which was the Return of the Jedi Tatooine sandstorm figure. It was quickly replaced with a figure based on the VOTC release. Both figures included a new breather mask as this release represents Chewbacca’s mynock hunt appearance in The Empire Strikes Back.
In 2011, Hasbro skipped both SL-24 and SL-26 and released two figures, Destroyer Droid and Space Trooper, as SL-31. This was apparently due to Hasbro’s pushing figures around in the line. At one point, SL-24 was listed as Obi-Wan but there were two variations of the SL-12 Obi-Wan and may account for that change. With the Saga Legends line ending at the end of 2011, Hasbro had no plans to add these two figures to the line or correct either of the SL-31 figures with a new number.
Coins
Like their 30th Anniversary Collection counterparts, the Saga Legends figures included coins during their 2007 run. There are eight different coins, one for each of the six films and two versions of the Expanded Universe coin. Each of the six film coins have a generic front showing multiple characters from their respective films while the backs have a Roman Numeral indicating which film it represents.
The Film column in the table above should correspond to the coin that each character included. You can also refer to the 30th Anniversary Coin Movie/Logo Matrix for further information. The Darktrooper is labeled as “Fans’ Choice #1” and came with a gold EU coin. While the coin was gold, it was not part of the 2007 Ultimate Galactic Hunt (UGH) line of chase figures.
On October 15, 2007, Hasbro confirmed that at least one of the 2008 Saga Legends figures would come with a silver Expanded Universe coin. At least three of the five figures that were picked for the final 2008 wave of Saga Legends were from the EU. The Q&A answer that provided this information hinted that not all three EU coins would be silver.
On January 9, 2008 Hasbro confirmed that the Shadow Stormtrooper and Utapau Shadow Trooper would come with black “Shadow” Expanded Universe coins.
On February 1, 2008 Hasbro announced that the Covert Ops Trooper would come with a gold EU coin like the one that was packed with the Darktrooper. A silver EU coin was never released.
Clone Gear
In 2008, when the line switched to the blue and white Stormtrooper packaging, the pack-in was a cardboard “locker.” This was advertised on the bubble insert as “Clone Gear” for the first 10 figures. With the release of SL-11, Destroyer Droid, the text was changed to “Battle Gear.” There was also a deco change on the locker, which had first been issued with a blue stripe and a Republic Logo. Both of those were removed for the remainder of the releases on the Stormtrooper card back.
When the 2009 orange and white packaging began, there was a third change to the deco of the locker, a maroon and orange stripe was added.
The contents of the lockers remained the same, with two exceptions, since their first appearance. Early releases included an EMP Launcher with blue painted stripes and the DC-15 Blaster Rifle had a brown painted stock. Both paint apps were dropped during the run. The following 6 weapons were included in the locker.
- BlasTech DC-17 Blaster
- BlasTech DC-15S Blaster Carbine
- BlasTech DC-15A Blaster Rifle
- BAW E-5 Battle Droid Blaster Rifle
- Sniper Rifle
- EMP Launcher
These weapons were taken from the Battlefront II exclusive sets but had been released with other figures previously.
Secret Weapons
The 2010 packaging included a new “Secret Weapons” feature much like the Clone Gear offering from 2008-2009, only with a twist. While the previous Clone Gear weapons lockers included the same accessories with every figure, the 2010 line had three assortments of weapons that could be packed with figures.
The first assortment was the same as that released from 2008-2009 and included the following six weapons:
- BlasTech DC-17 Blaster
- BlasTech DC-15S Blaster Carbine
- BlasTech DC-15A Blaster Rifle
- BAW E-5 Battle Droid Blaster Rifle
- Sniper Rifle
- EMP Launcher
Set two also had six weapons:
- BlasTech DC-15S Blaster Carbine
- BlasTech DC-15A Blaster Rifle
- Blaster Pistol
- Blaster Pistol
- Blaster Pistol
- Westar-M5 ARC Trooper Blaster Rifle
Set three had seven weapons:
- Blaster Pistol
- Blaster Pistol
- Blaster Pistol
- Westar-34 Blaster (Jango Fett’s blasters)
- DC-17M Stock Mount (Republic Commando rifle)
- DC-17M Stock Mount w/ Anti-Armor Attachment (Republic Commando rifle)
- BlasTech T-21 Light Repeating Blaster Rifle (Sandtrooper rifle)
The “Blaster Pistol” entries in sets two and three are the same and we’ll update with additional info when we track down the models.
The original Clone Gear assortment was taken from the Battlefront II sets while the new selections appear to be from the Republic Elite Forces multi-packs. While none of the weapons originated in those Multipacks, they may be the most recent uses for some of the more unique pistols.
The Secret Weapons were packed randomly with each figure. Hasbro also dropped the cardboard locker and each set of weapons was packed in a clear plastic bag. With the July 2011 release of new Saga Legends characters, Hasbro dropped the Secret Weapons.
Galactic Battle Game
With the August 2010 launch of the Shadow of the Dark Side packaging, Hasbro began packing in a playing card, stand and die with every figure released in the Clone Wars and Saga Legends lines. The card game feature was also included in most Battle Packs, the Class I vehicles (Clone Wars figure/vehicle sets) and some exclusive 2-pack figure sets.
Each card included a photo of the character it was included with, most taken from the films or Clone Wars cartoon, and a list of stats. The back of the card included instructions for playing the game. The stands include cut-out sections that are used with the game cards to give power boosts during game play.
501st Clone Trooper
The first run of the 501st Clone Trooper is a re-pack of the ROTS-65 figure and is based on the AT-TE Tank Gunner (ROTS-38) sculpt. It was initially reported, and shown at the 2006 San Diego Comic-Con, that this figure would be a re-paint of the ROTS-41 SA Clone Trooper.
Due to fan feedback, Hasbro issued a running change and the 2008 Fans’ Choice wave of figures shipped with a 501st re-paint of the ROTS-41 Clone Trooper sculpt. That version has been used in all subsequent Saga Legends releases of the 501st Trooper. The first release may or may not have had a “Fans’ Choice” sticker on the bubble.
Fans’ Choice #1
The Darktrooper won the Fans’ Choice poll and come with a sticker identifying it as such. This figure, along with the 2008 Covert Ops Trooper, came with a gold Expanded Universe coin. Neither figure was part of the 2007 UGH promotion, however, and as of this writing there is no silver version of the EU coin scheduled for the line.
Pit Droids
The Pit Droids were repacks of the Episode 1 Bonus Pit Droid figures. The three available in the first run were from the second wave of EP1 figures and came with a vertical box with handles. The box is plain silver in color where the original had several paint applications.
The Pit Droid sculpt that shipped with wave 1 of the EP1 Bonus packs, along with the horizontal box accessory, was available in the 2008 wave of Fans’ Choice figures. Hasbro initially reported that they had lost the sculpt to this version of the Droid but they recreated it for the SL line.
Sandtrooper
There were five versions of the Sandtrooper released during the Legends run. During the initial release, in 2007, the Corporal (black pauldron) figure was released in very short supply before being replaced by the Sergeant (white pauldron). Hasbro made up for this by releasing the Corporal in the 2008 line as SL-21 and again in 2009 as SL-10.
Two sculpts were used on the Sandtrooper figures, with most being based on the Saga Collection TSC-37 sculpt. The Evolutions sculpt was used for the second Squad Leader (orange pauldron) release in 2007.
Clone Trooper Officer
All of the Officer figures are based on the CW-50 super articulated Clone Trooper and were also released in the Entertainment Earth Clone Troop builder packs.
There are also paint variants of these figures being reported. Initially it seems that the four colored dots painted on the left chest armor were higher up towards the shoulder. Later versions have the dots painted lower, along the breast plate edge. We have the following three figures with dates:
- Yellow Commander, high dots: 71693
- Red Captain, lower dots: 72193
- Blue Lieutenant, lower dots: 71973
Imperial Officer
All three versions of the Imperial Officer are based on the POTJ sculpt. The first head sculpt is based on that release while the blonde and other brown/black head sculpt were originally released on the 2002 Saga card.
