The Strong Museum of Play

This past Saturday we had the chance to visit the Strong Museum of Play in Rochester, NY, and if you’re as big a fan of toys as we are, the Strong is a must-see.  Among other things, the Strong hosts the National Toy Hall of Fame and the World Video Game Hall of Fame.  They have multiple displays of toys ranging from the earliest dolls to the most recent action figures from the likes of Hasbro and Mattel.

Along with the displays of toys, the Strong has an excellent collection of pinball machines and vintage video games, all playable.  Included in the range of video games were a host of classic Star Wars games as well as the new Battle Pod game. They were on display as part of “The Force at Play” exhibit which is available until January 8, 2-17. Part of the exhibit also included the original 12 Star Wars figures by Kenner and a cool Hoth diorama.

Star Wars toys were inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame in 2011 and toys from all eras were on display throughout the museum. Bernard Loomis, who was responsible for securing the Star Wars toy license for Kenner, was inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame in 1992 and his photo is featured in the museum along with other important figures in the toy industry.

Being fans of Lego and G.I. Joe, we were happy to see multiple items from both lines at the museum as well, including some cool Samsonite branded Lego sets. Transformers, She-Ra, Barbie, dolls, trains, board and video games, and tin toys are all represented at The Strong. No matter what type of toy you may be interested in, we think you’ll find it on display.
