Commander WolffeWith all of the G.I. Joe Convention news over the weekend, we didn’t get around to posting much in the way of Star Wars news.  But, in fairness, there isn’t a lot going on right now.

The exception to that are some of the companies offering higher end collectibles, like Sideshow.  They blew us away on April 1st with a preview of their new 1:6 Commander Wolffe action figure.  The announcement was so out of left field that some thought, originally, that it was a hoax.  But it’s not and the actual figure is glorious.  This is possibly one of the best releases of armored Trooper characters that Sideshow has done to date.

Based on his appearance in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Commander Wolffe comes with both the Phase I and II helmets which sport the Wolfpack logo.  There are two portraits of the Commander himself, multiple hands, three blasters and a removable backpack.  The Sideshow exclusive comes with a Wolfpack stand.  Both the regular and exclusive will set you back $159.99 and have the payment plan available.

Commander Wolffe is scheduled for an October release.

Sideshow Commander Wolffe PreviewThis Thursday, Sideshow will offer up a pre-order for their new 1:6 scale Commander Wolffe figure.  The leader of the Wolfpack is a fan favorite character from The Clone Wars animated show and is looking to be one of the best Trooper releases from Sideshow to date.

He’ll come with both Phase I and II helmets along with two portraits, multiple hands and weapons.  He sports some of the most decorative armor and helmet designs we’ve seen yet and, if you order the exclusive, you’ll also receive a second stand with the Wolfpack logo on it.

Commander Wolffe will be priced at $159.99 for both regular and exclusive editions and we should expect to see the payment plan offered.  Pre-orders will start on Thursday, April 4th with the release of the weekly newsletter.  You can swing buy Sideshow’s preview page but don’t miss the post on Yakface.com where they have an exclusive early look at some photos not on Sideshow’s website.

The Future of Star Wars: Where Do We Go From Here?

Star Wars Gold Logo 200x92With the announcement yesterday that Star Wars: The Clone Wars would not be going forward on Cartoon Network, it seems that the franchise we all love has been taking some big hits.  As of Star Wars Celebration VI, last August, there were several promises for 2013 that looked to make this a banner year for fans of the franchise.

Then in October it was announced that Disney would be purchasing Lucasfilm for $4 billion dollars and things seem to have come to a screeching halt.

With the purchase of Lucasfilm, Disney announced that a new trilogy would begin in 2015 with Star Wars Episode VII.  While that trilogy would tie into the existing Saga, we’d also see standalone films that would run parallel to the expanding Saga.  But what did that mean for the existing franchises and those that had just been announced?

At Celebration VI it was announced that the 3D releases of both Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith would be coming in the fall of 2013.  The first hint that something was changing behind the scenes came when the dates for the 3D releases were shuffled to bring them closer together.  Then, on January 28th, both releases were cancelled.

Also on January 28th, Cartoon Network announced their fall 2013 schedule and Star Wars: The Clone Wars was not on it.  At the time the speculation was that Disney would want to pull the show over to one of their existing networks such as Disney XD.  It seemed like coincidence at the time, but now it seems possible that the fate of the Clone Wars was determined at the same time as that of the 3D releases, many of us just didn’t want to see it.

Besides The Clone Wars, yesterday’s StarWars.com article also brings up Star Wars: Detours and that it has been postponed. The animated show, from the creators of Robot Chicken, was first shown off at Celebration VI and was slated to hit the airwaves this year.  According to a post on twitter from Seth Green, the show is on hold but “Don’t fear, you’ll see it when the timing’s right.”  Still, that sounds less than promising for any type of weekly show.

LucasArts first showed off Star Wars: 1313 at E3 and then during Celebration VI, it had a lot of buzz coming out of the convention, but there have been little or no updates since.  The official website has been quiet as has the Facebook page where the only posts seem to be from fans asking for, well, anything to indicate that the project is still moving forward.  There’s been such little information that Stephen Totilo over at Kotaku wrote an article about it back on February 28th titled “The Strange Status of Star Wars 1313, A Hot Game with an Uncertain Future.”  With more adult themes, and set between Episodes III and IV, 1313 would take a look at the criminal underground on Coruscant.  That’s not necessarily the most family friendly video game.  Could Disney have cancelled or at least postponed the game?  With no evidence to the contrary, it seems possible.

When it comes to collecting, Hasbro had already been slowing down the Clone Wars line of toys and action figures, and even though they showed off new releases for this year, it was thought that we were seeing the final waves of animated action figures.   Now, looking at January 28th with new 20/20 hindsight, it makes more sense why Hasbro has cancelled nearly everything they showed at San Diego Comic-Con and Celebration VI, replacing them with toy lines that we had no notice of until February’s Toy Fair.

But where does that leave us going forward?  While, on one hand, we’ve been told it’s going to be business as usual at Lucasfilm, it’s hard to trust that at this point.

We have to wonder about Dark Horse Comics and how long they may be in the Star Wars business.  Since Disney owns Marvel Comics there are some (including us) that think it’s inevitable and only a matter of time before Dark Horse will have to give up the reins to the comic book license.  This would be familiar territory for Disney who ended a two year partnership with BOOM! Studios in favor of publishing their IP comics with Marvel.  For his part, Dark Horse President Mike Richardson announced back in October that “Star Wars will be with us for the near future.”  There are two new titles scheduled to come from Dark Horse this year but depending on when their current license runs out, we’d bet on hearing something from Disney soonish.  After all, we’d assume Disney would be looking at comic tie-ins to the new movies and that could be a good jumping on point for Marvel to take over.

What about the fans?  Celebration Europe II is coming up in July and based on a rumor from last year, we were kind of expecting an announcement for Celebration VII in 2014 during that event.  Could that be out of the question now?  It would seem that if a three convention deal had already been in place for Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center, which is what the rumor was, it would probably go forward but the Disney acquisition throws everything into question.  Could Star Wars Celebrations be cancelled or, at least, on hold until closer to the Episode VII release?  One of the major guest announcements for CEII has been Dave Filoni.  We wonder, with the cancellation of The Clone Wars, how his attendance will be affected and if it’ll have any effect on the mood of the show.

Even though Filoni mentioned in his video to fans that important Clone Wars stories were still “coming your way,” we have no indication yet of how or when that will happen.  With the ending, for now, of The Clone Wars and the postponement of Detours, that means we’ll have a period of time leading into Episode VII with no ongoing television series.  It seems to play into the comments that Robert Iger made about not over commercializing Star Wars.  If Disney takes a less is more approach over the next two years, it could help to make the new theatrical movies feel fresh.

Right now, it’s a very transitional period for Star Wars fans.  Even without new feature films, we had an idea of where things were heading in the gaming market, with books and comics and an ongoing television series.  With Disney now at the helm, nothing is certain.  We’ve seen several cancellations, postponements and possible delays all within the span of two months and it’s starting leave a sour taste.  We’ve certainly seen some of the early praise for Disney erode; it’s always easier to see what you’ve just lost rather than what you could gain in the future.

One thing is for certain, many fans want to see positive movement and they want to see it soon.

Cartoon Network Announces New Lego Special & Are They Dropping The Clone Wars?

Lego The Yoda ChroniclesCartoon Network issued a press release about their 2013 Fall TV season and absent from the lineup is Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but it does include a new series of specials from Lego, titled “The Yoda Chronicles.”

Since the announcement that Disney was buying Lucasfilm, there has been speculation that if The Clone Wars continued into a sixth season, it’s possible it could move to a Disney channel such as Disney XD.  While the lack of a Clone Wars listing in Cartoon Network’s press release isn’t confirmation of that, it may at least be an indication something will change with the series after season 5 has finished.

Fans of the previous Lego Star Wars specials will be happy to see the trend continue with three new specials.

The Yoda Chronicles: LEGO Star Wars returns in epic style with THE YODA CHRONICLES, a thrilling, funny and action-packed new LEGO Star Wars story told in three animated TV specials! Set in the “Prequel” Star Wars timeline, THE YODA CHRONICLES stars the one and only Yoda—the Jedi Master who has seen it all, done it all, and taught generations of Jedi Knights—in an all-new adventure. With the help of a fresh class of Padawans, Yoda leads the Jedi in a desperate fight to stop Darth Sidious and his minions from creating a new super-weapon that could crush the Republic and win the war for the forces of Evil.

It’s not just Star Wars fans that may be a little sad, “Young Justice” and “Green Lantern: The Animated Series” are missing from the list and appear to be replaced by “Teen Titans Go!” and “Beware the Batman.”

Bad News Out of Hasbro

Hasbro LogoLast night, Hasbro held a pre-Comic Con event in New York City where they covered some of their upcoming plans for Star Wars, G.I. Joe, Marvel, Transformers, Angry Birds and My Little Pony.  While they were showing off some cool stuff for G.I. Joe (Kre-O) and Transformers, along with the Angry Birds sets just announced on Monday, it wasn’t so good on the Star Wars action figure front.  Jedi Temple Archives and Galactic Hunter, among other websites, attended and reported back with some 2013 changes that aren’t so hot.

First up, forget the Mandalorian Assault Transport and Naboo Starfighter.  Although Hasbro talked about releasing the Transport again in 2013, those plans are now scrapped and so is the Naboo Starfighter, which suffered because of the early 2012 release of the Pod Racers.

Darth Maul with his spider legs, from The Clone Wars appearance, will be coming in realistic style as a deluxe figure and possibly as an exclusive.

Hasbro also has plans to release more of the late 2011 Vintage Collection figures, along with some 2012 figures, to online retail.  They’ll still be on their VC cards and not part of the Droid Factory line.  We’re not sure if this means all the cases of figures they said were sitting in distribution warehouses will be pushed our or if these will be new.  We may hear more about this by Toy Fair.

While I’m hugely disappointed by the cancellation of the Mando Transport and Naboo Fighter, it’s squarely on Hasbro’s shoulders for this situation.  While you can’t always gauge retail sales based on secondary market prices, the insanely low prices that the 1999 versions of the Pod Racers, which included figures, were pulling on eBay suggested there wasn’t enough demand for them.  While I did see some sell through at local stores, the fact that the local Target is still stocking new cases of the assortment in October points to a huge overproduction by Hasbro.

I love The Clone Wars, any new character announcement from that property is welcomed, but to bring out a deluxe Darth Maul with spider legs and make it look realistic while we still don’t have a Cliegg Lars is kind of crappy.  Hasbro has said that The Clone Wars is aimed more at kids than collectors so why not make this figure so that he looks like his appearance in the cartoon?  I have to think that some Saga collectors are going to pass on this because they feel it’s an Expanded Universe appearance, some just don’t like The Clone Wars and kids may pass if it looks too creepy.

As for releasing hard to find Vintage Collection figures to online retail?  I’ll believe it when I see it.  Hasbro said they’d re-release Wedge and the Gamorrean Guard because so many people missed them yet I saw more of the Gam Guard figure in 2010 than I did this year when he was supposed to be more abundant.  And I’ve still never seen Wedge at retail.  How can I believe that bringing Bastilla Shan, Ponda Baba and other hard to find figures back to retail, or online, is going to be any more successful?

And let’s face it, $10 per figure is too much.  I can pretty much guarantee that sales have suffered because of that price, especially when stores went to great lengths over the last two years, at least, to exclude Vintage Collection from sales that did include the Movie Heroes and Clone Wars figures.  You don’t see nearly as much talk of “army building” on the forums as you did even two years ago.  Nobody can afford it, especially when they have to pull their most wanted, and unique, figures from the secondary market, or order by the case and eat up to 6 figures, in some instances, that they don’t want or already have.

Hasbro has a long way to go to bring back interest in their action figure lines and abandoning the Clone Wars style figures, dropping vehicles and overloading on re-release and rehashed characters is not the way to do it.  I’m not looking forward to 2013 since the past 3 years, when averaged together, have mostly been a failure at retail for collectors.

Taking a break from the Celebration VI coverage to post the new trailer for the 5th season of Star Wars The Clone Wars.  Looks like there is going to be a lot of action in the upcoming season and the trailer features plenty of lightsaber battles, Mandalorians, bounty hunters and droids on the loose.  If this doesn’t get you pumped for the upcoming season, I don’t think anything will.
