Her Universe - Ask Ellen

Last week, Ashley Eckstein kicked off the Year of the Fangirl campaign and this week she’s announcing a new monthly online column called “Ask Ellen.”  The column, written by Dr. Ellen Connell,  will address bullying and other issues that fangirls may encounter.

HER UNIVERSE CREATOR ASHLEY ECKSTEIN REVEALS NEW MONTHLY ONLINE COLUMN, “ASK ELLEN,” OFFERING SUPPORT AND ADVICE FOR FANGIRLS

Dr Ellen ConnellNEW YORK, NY – March 5th, 2013 – Bullying has been a major problem in the fangirl community and actress Ashley Eckstein has been an advocate in the anti-bullying movement. Wanting to help fight this issue and many other concerns which directly affect fangirls, Eckstein, the voice of Ahsoka Tano on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and founder of Her Universe™, a leading sci-fi apparel line for women, announced today a new monthly online column offering support and advice to female fans on matters that affect them. The new “Ask Ellen” column is written by Ellen Connell and will run throughout the month on the Her Universe blog at www.HerUniverse.com. “Ask Ellen” will be an ongoing sounding board addressing everyday issues that affect the lives of fangirls and offering possible solutions to these problems.

“Ellen and I have been friends for many years now,” said Ashley Eckstein. “This past summer after attending San Diego Comic Con together we both felt a need to do more for the fangirl community. I wanted to find a way to offer advice to fangirls dealing with everyday issues like bullying and Ellen felt compelled to put her knowledge from her studies in clinical psychology to good use. Together we came up with the idea for our column, ‘Ask Ellen.’ I grew up reading the ‘Dear Abby’ column in the newspaper, so I am very excited to be able to offer something similar to our fangirls.”

Ellen Connell has a Psy.D in Clinical Psychology and is working towards becoming licensed as a Psychologist in California. Before returning to graduate school for her degree, she worked in the animated television and film industry for several years. Two of those years, she worked at Lucasfilm Animation as a Script and Casting Assistant Production Manager for the first season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and met Eckstein. Although Connell loved working on The Clone Wars, she also felt called toward another passion—helping people directly as a therapist. Having grown up as a theatre geek who loved fantasy, Connell didn’t always fit in with the other kids in her class, and she remembers feeling the loneliness that came from thinking that she didn’t belong. After learning to improve her self-esteem as an adult, she felt a desire to help people, especially girls, who struggle to feel better about themselves. Connell left Lucasfilm to attend graduate school, training in psychology, and is currently working as a psychotherapist in San Diego.

“I’m really excited to work with Ashley and the Her Universe community through the ‘Ask Ellen’ column,” Connell said. “I hope to offer support to girls who are struggling to feel good about themselves. I’m glad Her Universe provides a community for fangirls, and I look forward to contributing to it in any way I can.”

The “Ask Ellen” column is part of a special year-long campaign, “Year of the Fangirl,” which will highlight and recognize one of the fastest growing segments of the sci-fi/fantasy/pop culture audience…women. Every day a different fangirl will be spotlighted on HerUniverse.com, to showcase the community’s diversity, dreams and interests.

The “Year of the Fangirl” campaign officially launched February 25th; however, additional elements and opportunities for female fans will be added throughout the year including a very special event in coordination with San Diego Comic Con. More information will follow soon.

NEW YORK, NY – February 25th, 2013 – Ashley Eckstein, the voice of Ahsoka Tano on the television series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and founder of Her Universe, the groundbreaking sci-fi apparel line for fangirls, announced today a very special year-long campaign to highlight and recognize one of the fastest growing and important segments of the sci-fi/fantasy/pop culture audience…women. Geek Girls, as they sometimes are affectionately known, can be found in every walk of life and beginning today, HerUniverse.com will shine the spotlight on a different fangirl every day showing their diversity, dreams and interests. Featured fangirls will be selected from submissions by way of fans and a team of 5 fangirl contributors, personally picked by Eckstein, who will be searching across the U.S. and the world for individual stories of every day female fans.

“From day one, it’s been very important to me to make Her Universe a positive and supportive community for fangirls,” said Ashley Eckstein. “I’ve traveled the nation over the past 2 years with Her Universe and I have been inspired by so many amazing women. There are several great outlets that highlight fangirl celebrities and pop culture news but I wanted to create a place where we will share the stories of everyday women who are proudly letting their geek flag fly! If she considers herself a fangirl, we want to hear her story!”

Eckstein is encouraging fans to submit their choice for a “fangirl of the day” on the Her Universe website. Fangirls of any age can be nominated and profiled; however, fangirls under the age of 13 must be nominated by their parent or guardian. Starting today, the fangirl form can be found on the Her Universe website (www.heruniverse.com) with questions to be filled out about the female fan to be profiled. Once completed, individuals can submit the form on the site, and attach a photo (optional). Each day, Eckstein and the fangirl volunteers, will spotlight a “fangirl of the day” on the Her Universe website and its social media platforms.

The Geek Girl contributors Eckstein has assembled for this project reflects the variety and creative nature of the fangirl community:

Erin Kelahan – a longtime sci-fi/fantasy fangirl and passionate supporter of Her Universe and fangirls everywhere. Erin’s goal in life is to help as many people as possible find and embrace their inner geek.

Amy Ratcliffe – a freelance writer, Star Wars enthusiast, twitter addict and all-around geek who enjoys most things sci-fi and fantasy. Amy has written about comics, cosplay, conventions, and other topics around the internet and in print.

Victoria Schmidt – a veteran cosplayer “Scruffy Rebel,” and co-founder of the geek girl fashion and style blog, “Set To Stunning.” A geek fashion trendsetter who has spent her life devoted to a broad range of fandoms.

Lillian Skye – a Star Wars fan since before she could hold a lightsaber, now a junior in high school, Lillian writes for a student run publication published weekly by the Tampa Bay Times and has her own blog for geek chic Star Wars fans called “Fangirls in the Force.”

The “Year of the Fangirl” campaign officially launches today, February 25th, on www.heruniverse.com but additional elements and opportunities for Geek Girls will be added throughout the year, including a very special event in coordination with San Diego Comic Con. • Doctor Who – You Are The Bow Tie To My Suspenders / You Are The Key To My TARDIS / You Are The Doctor To My Companion
  • Star Trek- You Are The Logic To My Vulcan / You Are The Purrr To My Tribble / You Are The Captain To My Starship”

For the quote Tees Eckstein has worked with fellow fangirl, Anne Convery, as a guest designer. When Ashley and I brainstormed the ‘You are the __ to My __’ shirt, it really brought home to me just how key the relationships are in Doctor Who.”

“When I think of the iconic Geek Girl, I think of Anne,” said Eckstein. “She is such an inspiration to me. I have been picking Anne’s brain on designs for a few years now and it’s about time that we collaborated on something for Her Universe!”

The Star Wars, Doctor Who and Star Trek Quote Tees are available to order now at www.heruniverse.com. Make sure to order no later than February 6th to guarantee delivery by February 14th, Valentine’s Day.

She has no other way of explaining how she knows random trivia like the working title of the first Star Wars movie or what planet Togruta are from.
