Jumbo ZuckussGentle Giant posted several new pre-orders last night, some for new The Walking Dead mini busts, but one new Star Wars item is now up; Jumbo Zuckuss.

With this announcement, Gentle Giant has now offered five of the six The Empire Strikes Back Bounty Hunters.  IG-88 is the lone holdout.

Zuckuss will come packaged in the standard blister packaging, sporting a TESB card with 45-back style artwork.  The figure is scheduled for a first quarter 2014 release and rings up at $80 directly from Gentle Giant.

Gentle Giant Pre-Orders

Gentle Giant posted five new pre-orders last night, three for products we’ve been waiting on and two busts that are so redundant it’s almost embarrassing.  First, let’s get to the good; the excellent new Grand Admiral Thrawn mini bust and two more Jumbo Bounty Hunters, 4-LOM and Dengar.

Grand Admiral Thrawn was first shown off in a report over on RebelScum.com back in March and with this pre-order, we now know that we can expect him towards the end of the year.  Priced at $75, the Admiral is in his dress whites and includes an Ysalamir which he uses as a defense against the Jedi in Timothy Zahn’s classic series that’s become known as the Thrawn Trilogy.

Gentle Giant had already declared 2013 as The Year of the Bounty Hunter for their Jumbo line of 12-inch, Kenner inspired retro figures with the release of the Rocket Firing version of Boba Fett and pre-orders for IG-88 and Bossk.  Now we have two more to to fill out the ranks.

In what’s sure to generate a variant at some point, Gentle Giant has gone ahead and corrected a 33 year old mistake and is offering the second droid bounty hunter with his correct name, 4-LOM.  The 12-inch action figure is priced at $80 and, like the Admiral and the other releases, is slated for a 4th quarter release.

Also priced at $80, Dengar will come with The Empire Strikes Back card which will have 45 back artwork.

None of these offerings are exclusive to Gentle Giant so be on the lookout for cheaper prices from your favorite online dealers.

The final two offerings from Gentle Giant include two deluxe mini bust releases of Luke Skywalker in his Snowspeeder Pilot outfit.  The reason we called this redundant is that one version is a Premier Guild exclusive and will include three sets of arms so he can be posed holding a lightsaber, grappling hook launcher or a blaster.  The second release, NOT an exclusive, will have two arms, one with a blaster and the second with the grappling hook launcher.

After the colossal screwup with the General Veers mini busts in 2012, we can’t help but think this is just a total disaster waiting to happen.  The busts don’t even have different price points, they’re both ringing in at $85 and because the only artwork available is computer generated, and not Lucasfilm Licensing approved as of this writing,  there’s absolutely no way of knowing which version should be ordered.  There’s nothing to really differentiate them from each other.

Trust in Gentle Giant, that they’ll actually deliver what they’re advertising, is at an all-time low for many collectors.  We can only wish our fellow collectors good luck if they take a shot at either of these releases.

It’s a shame that Gentle Giant will waste tooling budget on these two versions of the Luke mini bust when they still haven’t delivered the 1:6 scale R2-D2 statue they first showed off in 2005.

RebelScum.com offered up two new Gentle Giant features Wednesday night when they posted a Q&A with Ashly Powell, Director of Product Development, and got a scoop on the upcoming Grand Admiral Thrawn mini bust.

The Q&A didn’t offer up a lot of new information besides the Thrawn announcement, but the MIA R2-D2 statue was brought up.  It’s still in the works, GG just has to work around some setbacks in production.

Also discussed were the Leia on Speeder Bike diorama (on hold), more Jumbo playsets (no plans) and the statue and maquette lines (more coming, no details).  Head over Rebel Scum’s website for the full read of the Q&A and check out the Thrawn pictures.

Gentle Giant Jumbo IG-88With the release of the 2012 Premier Guild exclusive Gamorrean Guard, Gentle Giant gave us a look at 10 new Jumbo figures from The Empire Strikes Back.  Apparently, they aren’t wasting any time getting to them.

Last night, Gentle Giant put up a pre-order for IG-88.  IG-88 will come on a Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back card which will feature a 45 back design.  He’s $80.00 and is scheduled for a third quarter release.

Along with Boba Fett and the upcoming Boss, IG-88 will put us halfway to a set of the TESB bounty hunters.

Gentle Giant has announced their 2013 Premier Guild gifts and they include three Star Wars offerings and a Marvel bust of War Machine.  All Premier Guild memberships have gone up $10 to $80 for the year.  The 2013 membership will include a 10% discount on all orders for regular releases, a $30 coupon on in-stock orders and a $10 gift certificate good on any one order, including pre-orders.

In order to guarantee your choice of membership gift, you must join the Premier Guild before June 1, 2013.  All four gifts are listed for the fourth quarter but based on past years, we wouldn’t expect them before we ring in 2014.

Mace Windu from Attack of the Clones.  One of Gentle Giant’s earliest busts, released in 2002 sans arms, Mace Windu makes a comeback with his unique purple bladed lightsaber.

Boba Fett Rocket Firing First Shot.  Shot all in blue, with no paint, the J-Slot recreation of the vintage Kenner prototype will ship in a blister card inside a polybag.

Darth Vader Holographic Mini Bust. This release is a copy of the 2005 Revenge of the Sith bust only now in clear blue resin.  The bust also lights up.

War Machine Mini Bust.  Featuring light-up effects, this new bust is based on the Iron Man 2 appearance of the armor, as worn by Don Cheadle’s Rhody Rhodes.

We moved the Gentle Giant Large Scale Retro Figure (Jumbo) checklist to the new format and updated with a lot of new info, including 10 new The Empire Strikes Back figures that were revealed with the release of the Gamorrean Guard.

While the new characters have not yet been confirmed by Gentle Giant, the back of the card in the Gamorrean Guard Premier Guild Membership figure is good enough for us.

Gentle Giant General Veers Mini Bust Update

General Veers Mini BustBack in 2011, at San Diego Comic-Con, Gentle Giant previewed a mini bust of General Veers in his helmet and armor from his appearance commanding an AT-AT in The Empire Strikes Back.  At the time, Gentle Giant announced that he would be the standard release and a deluxe bust would be offered for pre-order in 2012, as a Premier Guild exclusive, that would have removable armor and a second portrait allowing owners to display him as a regular officer or in command of the AT-AT.

That has changed.  Some time during the production of the busts, it was decided by Gentle Giant that the general release would be Veers in his officer outfit only, no AT-AT armor.  That was, apparently, never announced.

It wasn’t until the busts started showing up that people discovered the problem.  As of Sunday, the order page for the regular release still showed Veers in his armor and online retailers still were showing that as well.

Yesterday, Gentle Giant updated their website to show Veers in his officer outfit, updated the description and issued the following statement to their Facebook page:

Dear Collectors,

The concept for the regular edition of our General Veers Mini Bust changed in development. Originally, the regular edition bust featured General Veers wearing un-removable AT-AT pilot armor. In revising the bust, we decided to display him in his officer’s uniform instead. We failed to keep you updated about the nature of these changes before this piece was released. This was unintentional, and we sincerely apologize for any disappointment and confusion this error has caused. If you are not satisfied with the final product, please return it and we will be happy to issue a full refund.

Sincerely,
The Team at Gentle Giant Ltd

The main issue here is that many collectors ordered the regular release as Veers in his helmet and armor is the more desirable choice, he was cheaper than the deluxe release and offered for pre-order first.  The result was that his edition size is 1,200 pieces while the Premier Guild exclusive is limited to only 430 pieces.  Since this problem was discovered, the PGM version has sold out leaving, possibly, hundreds of fans without the ability to order the bust they thought they’d be getting.  A bust that was advertised for well over a year.

The apology by Gentle Giant is unacceptable.

It’s a complete slap in the face to collectors who have been discussing the bust on forums for a year, forums that Gentle Giant themselves are members of.

It’s false advertising by Gentle Giant who not only left the incorrect sales page live on their website long after they knew there was a change, but they also continued to allow their retail partners to advertise the incorrect bust.

Gentle Giant has failed time and time again to be a good steward of the Star Wars license and they seem both unwilling and incapable of correcting their errors even when they’ve been pointed out to them.  They’re always “trying” to do better, listening to the fans and doing their best.  Yet each time they come to a point where a decision can be made that will rectify their utter incompetence, they always, always, make the wrong choice.

Lucas Licensing seems to have turned a blind eye to the years of complaints over Gentle Giant’s handling of the property and of customer complaints.  This is one time that I can truly say I hope Disney’s new ownership of the Star Wars property will impact the way the various licensees deal with customers.

I think the only choice, after years of neglect and mismanagement, is for Gentle Giant to have their license revoked.

Gentle Giant offered up three new items today, two pre-orders and their surprise January release; Jumbo Luke Skywalker X-Wing Pilot.

Luke X-Wing is $80 regular price but Premier Guild Members (PGM) can order for the next 48 hours for only $49.00.  He’s limited to 1,000 pieces and will ship now as he’s in stock.

For pre-orders, Gentle Giant is also offering up a Jumbo Bossk figure which will come on a Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back card.  Priced at $80, PG members can save themselves $8 when ordering directly from GG.  He’s scheduled for a 3rd quarter release and no edition size has been released.

The final pre-order, Darth Malgus, is a mini bust also slated for the 3rd quarter.  The picture shown is still listed as “Pending Licensor Approval” so we should see new pictures and a final sculpt later on.  Again, $80 is the regular retail for the bust with PG members able to order him for $72.  No edition size has been set.

If you are a Premier Guild Member, you must be logged into your account to see the discounted pricing.

Gentle Giant Jumbo Gamorrean GuardGentle Giant posted a photo on their Facebook page today, showing off production versions of their upcoming Jumbo Gamorrean Guard figures.  Both the Premier Guild Power of the Force and general release Return of the Jedi versions are shown, packaged.  This is the first look we’ve had at the coin that’s coming with the POTF version.

If you recall, the ROTJ version was originally planned as one of the 2012 gifts for Premier Guild Members but was later changed to POTF.  Both are still available from Gentle Giant’s website.
