Star Wars Gold Logo 200x92Fans of the animated Star Wars tales take note, 2014 will see the debut of the next animated series, Star Wars Rebels.  Set between Episode III and IV, Rebels will follow the Empire as it hunts down the last of the Jedi and tries to suppress the growing rebellion.

Dave Filoni will be on board as executive producer while Simon Kinberg and Greg Weisman join the franchise.  Weisman worked on “Young Justice” which was an excellent series.

The new show will debut with a one hour premier episode on the Disney Channel and then move to Disney XD on a weekly basis.  A preview of the show will be shown at Star Wars Celebration Europe which is coming up in July.

This announcement comes on the heels of the new domain names that Lucasfilm registered earlier in the month and the tease, by Filoni, about drawing a TIE Fighter for the first time.  Now that we know where the Rebels name is being used, we can’t wait to hear what the Wolf Pack domains are destined for!

New Domain Names Point to the Future?

Dave Filoni TIE FighterFusible is reporting that Lucasfilm has registered over 10 new domain names that could point to future projects.  With the acquisition by Disney last year and the agreement, announced this week, with EA, these could be early hints at new TV or movie projects or something in the video game realm.

Dave Filoni tweeted a photo of a TIE Fighter earlier in the week leading to speculation that he’s working on a new Original Trilogy era property.  Could that be related to two of the new domains, Filoni’s own Wolf Pack Adventures or Star Wars Wolf Pack?  Anyone’s guess at this point.

Hard to believe that I've worked at LFL almost 8 yrs, & this is the first time I have gotten to draw a TIE fighter. http://t.co/0H6Z9hS0lq

While many of the domains have more of a video game feel to them, Gungan Frontier 2 – 4 and Star Wars Alliance, for example, Star Wars Rebels and the two Wolf Pack names could fit in several places.

As Fusible mentions, still no new word on Star Wars: 1313 or the First Assault games that were in development before Disney shut down LucasArts.

Disney: New Star Wars Films Every Year Starting in 2015

Star Wars Gold Logo 200x92When Disney bought Lucasfilm last October, one of their first announcements was a new trilogy of Star Wars movies beginning in 2015 with Episode VII.  Wednesday, at CinemaCon, Disney Studio chief Alan Horn announced that the trilogy would release every two years starting in 2015 and continuing in 2017 and 2019.

Horn also reiterated their plans to do standalone films, focusing on individual characters, possibly releasing in the years between the trilogy films.  However, there are conflicting reports on this matter.

Variety reports that Horn “did not elaborate as to when they would be released,” while CommingSoon.net is reporting that there will be a new movie every year.

Whether it turns out that there will be films every year or every other, it seems that Disney is taking a page out of their Marvel playbook.  It’s not known yet if the individual films will build on characters and plot that feed into the trilogy or if they’ll stand outside of that continuity, possibly looking at the Old Republic period or even moving forward in time.  It’s possible we could even see some animated movies, although they may feel like poor replacements for The Clone Wars which we lost this year.

At this point, I’m not really happy with much that Disney has announced.  So far it seems like mostly bad news, all we’ve had are things taken away from us while only being handed promises that have yet to be backed by any substance.

Looking at this from the standpoint of collectors, people who have been in the game for more than a couple of years have to be looking at the this with mixed anticipation and dread; it’s always fun to add new items to the collection but if you’re a “one of everything” collector, even if it’s only from one company, the prospect of never ending new toys or busts or props to buy, and where to put it, is daunting.

This new announcement seemed to have overshadowed the fact that there were more personnel cuts at Lucasfilm this week, including the licensing department.  Disney seems to be making it very clear that they wanted the intellectual property and don’t really care about the people that helped build the franchise into what it’s become today.  If we start hearing that people such as Leland Chee and Pablo Hidalgo or Mary Franklin have been let go, I think it will definitely signal the end of the Star Wars franchise as we know it.

Disney Droid Factory Expansion

WDW Droid FactoryLast year’s launch of the Droid Factory feature at Hollywood Studios in Orlando, FL was one of our top stories for the year and delivered some of the most interesting collectibles of 2012.  One downside to the attraction was that it required a ticket into the park as it was located in the Tatooine Traders store.

No more.  The Droid Factory is now part of Once Upon a Toy which is located in Downtown Disney and doesn’t require a ticket to be accessed.  From the photo, which was posted by Attractions Magazine, it appears that the station is now four-sided which allows more room for fans to build their Astromech droids.

According to their twitter feed, Attractions Magazine is saying that there are no new parts available yet but it’s been heavily rumored that Disney may be adding or swapping out new colors as we move forward.

It also seemed to be just a formality that Droid Factory hadn’t yet been added to Disneyland but YakFace.com, today, is reporting via EndorExpress.net that this expansion is finally done.

While we’re hoping for new droid parts in the future, and welcome the free access, we do hope that parts will be the same between the two parks and that there won’t be exclusives only available on one coast or the other.

The Future of Star Wars: Where Do We Go From Here?

Star Wars Gold Logo 200x92With the announcement yesterday that Star Wars: The Clone Wars would not be going forward on Cartoon Network, it seems that the franchise we all love has been taking some big hits.  As of Star Wars Celebration VI, last August, there were several promises for 2013 that looked to make this a banner year for fans of the franchise.

Then in October it was announced that Disney would be purchasing Lucasfilm for $4 billion dollars and things seem to have come to a screeching halt.

With the purchase of Lucasfilm, Disney announced that a new trilogy would begin in 2015 with Star Wars Episode VII.  While that trilogy would tie into the existing Saga, we’d also see standalone films that would run parallel to the expanding Saga.  But what did that mean for the existing franchises and those that had just been announced?

At Celebration VI it was announced that the 3D releases of both Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith would be coming in the fall of 2013.  The first hint that something was changing behind the scenes came when the dates for the 3D releases were shuffled to bring them closer together.  Then, on January 28th, both releases were cancelled.

Also on January 28th, Cartoon Network announced their fall 2013 schedule and Star Wars: The Clone Wars was not on it.  At the time the speculation was that Disney would want to pull the show over to one of their existing networks such as Disney XD.  It seemed like coincidence at the time, but now it seems possible that the fate of the Clone Wars was determined at the same time as that of the 3D releases, many of us just didn’t want to see it.

Besides The Clone Wars, yesterday’s StarWars.com article also brings up Star Wars: Detours and that it has been postponed. The animated show, from the creators of Robot Chicken, was first shown off at Celebration VI and was slated to hit the airwaves this year.  According to a post on twitter from Seth Green, the show is on hold but “Don’t fear, you’ll see it when the timing’s right.”  Still, that sounds less than promising for any type of weekly show.

LucasArts first showed off Star Wars: 1313 at E3 and then during Celebration VI, it had a lot of buzz coming out of the convention, but there have been little or no updates since.  The official website has been quiet as has the Facebook page where the only posts seem to be from fans asking for, well, anything to indicate that the project is still moving forward.  There’s been such little information that Stephen Totilo over at Kotaku wrote an article about it back on February 28th titled “The Strange Status of Star Wars 1313, A Hot Game with an Uncertain Future.”  With more adult themes, and set between Episodes III and IV, 1313 would take a look at the criminal underground on Coruscant.  That’s not necessarily the most family friendly video game.  Could Disney have cancelled or at least postponed the game?  With no evidence to the contrary, it seems possible.

When it comes to collecting, Hasbro had already been slowing down the Clone Wars line of toys and action figures, and even though they showed off new releases for this year, it was thought that we were seeing the final waves of animated action figures.   Now, looking at January 28th with new 20/20 hindsight, it makes more sense why Hasbro has cancelled nearly everything they showed at San Diego Comic-Con and Celebration VI, replacing them with toy lines that we had no notice of until February’s Toy Fair.

But where does that leave us going forward?  While, on one hand, we’ve been told it’s going to be business as usual at Lucasfilm, it’s hard to trust that at this point.

We have to wonder about Dark Horse Comics and how long they may be in the Star Wars business.  Since Disney owns Marvel Comics there are some (including us) that think it’s inevitable and only a matter of time before Dark Horse will have to give up the reins to the comic book license.  This would be familiar territory for Disney who ended a two year partnership with BOOM! Studios in favor of publishing their IP comics with Marvel.  For his part, Dark Horse President Mike Richardson announced back in October that “Star Wars will be with us for the near future.”  There are two new titles scheduled to come from Dark Horse this year but depending on when their current license runs out, we’d bet on hearing something from Disney soonish.  After all, we’d assume Disney would be looking at comic tie-ins to the new movies and that could be a good jumping on point for Marvel to take over.

What about the fans?  Celebration Europe II is coming up in July and based on a rumor from last year, we were kind of expecting an announcement for Celebration VII in 2014 during that event.  Could that be out of the question now?  It would seem that if a three convention deal had already been in place for Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center, which is what the rumor was, it would probably go forward but the Disney acquisition throws everything into question.  Could Star Wars Celebrations be cancelled or, at least, on hold until closer to the Episode VII release?  One of the major guest announcements for CEII has been Dave Filoni.  We wonder, with the cancellation of The Clone Wars, how his attendance will be affected and if it’ll have any effect on the mood of the show.

Even though Filoni mentioned in his video to fans that important Clone Wars stories were still “coming your way,” we have no indication yet of how or when that will happen.  With the ending, for now, of The Clone Wars and the postponement of Detours, that means we’ll have a period of time leading into Episode VII with no ongoing television series.  It seems to play into the comments that Robert Iger made about not over commercializing Star Wars.  If Disney takes a less is more approach over the next two years, it could help to make the new theatrical movies feel fresh.

Right now, it’s a very transitional period for Star Wars fans.  Even without new feature films, we had an idea of where things were heading in the gaming market, with books and comics and an ongoing television series.  With Disney now at the helm, nothing is certain.  We’ve seen several cancellations, postponements and possible delays all within the span of two months and it’s starting leave a sour taste.  We’ve certainly seen some of the early praise for Disney erode; it’s always easier to see what you’ve just lost rather than what you could gain in the future.

One thing is for certain, many fans want to see positive movement and they want to see it soon.

Live-action Star Wars TV Show Back On?

Star Wars Logo Small Black Star BackgroundEW.com is reporting that ABC is looking into the possibility of a live-action Star Wars television program.  Although we’ve heard in the past, from Rick McCallum, that 50 scripts had been written, the show as envisioned was too expensive to produce.

Now that Disney has acquired Lucasfilm, and they own several television channels, it’s possible that costs could be better managed.  With ABC going forward on the new Marvel show, “S.H.I.E.L.D.,” it seems as though Disney is looking to leverage their most popular brands while there’s good buzz surrounding them.

The EW article mentions “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” possibly moving to Disney XD once its current deal with Cartoon Network expires, but doesn’t mention the “Detours” project that was being worked on by Lucasfilm and “Robot Chicken” creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich.

Interestingly, the EW article expands on some of the possible storyline, which seems to share themes with the upcoming “1313″ video game.
