StarWars.com posted a May the 4th Microsite with details on quite a few events around the country along with other ways to celebrate; including movie marathons and even recipes for Star Wars themed Mocktails.

Also, be sure to head over to Roqoo Depot’s May the 4th roundup which is pretty comprehensive.

If all of the Star Wars events aren’t enough, don’t forget that Saturday is also Free Comic Book Day which includes a Star Wars comic from Dark Horse.  To find your local comic book store, check out the Comic Shop Locator Service.

April marks the 20th anniversary of Jurassic Park and the film will be released to theaters in its new 3D format.  To celebrate, Hasbro is releasing four lines of Jurassic Park toys which will be exclusive to Toys-R-Us.  There have been a few reports of these sets being out already, but if you haven’t seen them don’t panic, they’re scheduled for an April release.

The packaging for all the lines will include information about the dinosaurs, including speed, strength and special abilities.  The Dino Trackers and Dino Showdown sets will include action figures alongside the dinosaurs while Dino Growlers feature sound effets and “specialized attacking action.”  The three figures in the Trackers line are new sculpts and have limited articulation while the two figures in the Showdown sets feature new head sculpts and existing bodies from the G.I. Joe line of toys.  Prices range from $7.99 to $24.99 for the larger sets.

Early finds of the Showdown sets included cross-sell photos on the back of the boxes that were covered with tape.  Thanks to Jason at Grape Soda, who posted photos of the box, it looks like there were plans for a third release in both the Growlers and Showdown lines.  The Growlers toy is a Triceratops while the Showdown line had a Stegosaurus Strike set.

Jurassic Park Tattoo FigureBased on prototypes listed on eBay and word from one of the toy designers, there was also a Carnotaurus dino worked up for the Showdown line along with a figure based on the G.I. Joe Flash and Grand Slam sculpt.  Another figure, sporting Roadblock’s Renegades body with a new head and excellent tattoo paint apps, has been listed on eBay on and off since, at least, early 2012.

Here’s a quick rundown of the lines, prices and features:

  • Dino Battlers ($7.99): 3-inch 2-packs of dinosaurs
    • Triceratops vs T-Rex
    • Spinosaurus vs Velociraptor
    • Spinosaurus vs T-Rex
    • Velociraptor vs T-Rex
  • Dino Trackers ($9.99): Human figure w/ specialized weapon accessory & dinosaur
    • Ground Patrol vs T-Rex
    • Sky Patrol vs Pteranodon
    • Marine Patrol vs Spinosaurus
  • Dino Growlers ($17.99): Realistic sound effects & specialized attacking action
    • T-Rex
    • Velociraptor
  • Dino Showdown ($24.99): Dinosaurs w/ specialized attack & human character
    • Allosaurus Assault
    • Pachyrhinosaurus Clash

There’s no word yet from Hasbro if the line will be expanded beyond these initial releases.  Check out the photos below and, if you love dinosaurs, be sure to head over to Toys-R-Us and pick up these sets.

Naboo Starfighter

Hasbro showed off their excellent new Naboo Starfighter way back in 2011 and it was scheduled to be released last year in support of the 3D release of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.  It never made it to store shelves in the US.

Although online retailers did have it for sale, usually by the case with a Republic Assault Tank and Jedi Starfighter, the widest release for the ship was overseas in the UK and Australia as well as parts of Europe and Asia.  I missed out on ordering a case online but, luckily, Amazon UK ships to New York.  I received my order yesterday and took a few minutes to snap some pictures of this excellent ship.

The upgrades to this ship, from its original release in 1999, are quite noticeable.  It’s longer and more streamlined, for one, the cockpit slides open and there’s now a working  droid slot.  The electronics are gone, but there’s a launching missile underneath along with two that pop out of the nacelles.

With the currency difference, and shipping, it cost about $50 to have this shipped over.  That’s a little less than current eBay rates and less than buying a case.  The packaging has several languages on it, as it’s the European release, but the ship, instructions and stickers are the same.

Hasbro said at Toy Fair that there’s no outlet for the Movie Heroes version of this ship to appear at retail in the US.  While it’s possible that they could find a release for it in the future, it probably won’t be in the Class II Assault Vehicle line which has been downsized.  If you have an opportunity to pick this up, and not pay inflated secondary market prices, do so.  It’s an excellent update to a prominent Prequel Trilogy vehicle.

Toy Fair Wrap-Up: The Good, the Black and the Unnecessary

The 2013 American International Toy Fair closed its doors last Wednesday and left us with an idea of what toys we’ll be seeing on store shelves over the next 10 months.

This is a big year for movie action figures with Hasbro releasing lines for G.I. Joe, Iron Man 3 and Thor, NECA has Pacific Rim and The Lone Ranger, Mattel and others will be offering up Man of Steel and even Lego is on board with Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and The Lone Ranger, not to mention their continuing Marvel sets.

The Good

GI Joe EaglehawkLego showed off some really fun toys for 2013, both in existing lines such as Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, but also in new, The Lone Ranger, and revisited, Castle, properties.  The Stagecoach Escape (79108) from The Lone Ranger line is excellent.  It seems to capture all the fun elements you could want from a western theme, and it’s still reasonably priced for a quality Lego build.

I also like the looks of the new Play Arts Kai series of DC Comics superheroes from Square Enix.  The highly stylized action figures of Wonder Woman and Batman feature lots of articulation and accessories.  Their take on the Flash is interesting and not something I think we’ve seen before.  I’ll also be interested in seeing final production pictures Batgirl.

Being a G.I. Joe fan, it was exciting to see Hasbro take a shot at one of my favorite vintage vehicles, the Tomahawk.  Now called the Eaglehawk, the helicopter features some updated seating and rotor blades along with classic features such as the winch and opening rear door.  General badassery also still included.

The Black

R2-D2 6 inch Black SeriesHasbro’s Black Series of action figures, covering both the new 6″ scale and the existing 3.75″ figures, may turn out to be decent lines of toys.  Hasbro is promising nothing but new sculpts for the smaller line while the larger line will have a moderate release schedule and stick to the most iconic heroes from the Saga films.  With 2013 almost being a lost year due to changes in the 3D movie release schedule and residual problems from 2012, I’m hoping Hasbro can take a beat before coming back stronger in 2014.  Next year will probably be a transition year before they have to delve into the new Disney Star Wars films and there’s the possibility we could see them check off a lot of characters from their infamous “parking lot.”

The Unnecessary

In a toy market that’s seen a lot of price increases in the last two years, I can respect a company for looking at ways to keep costs down.  Going to 5 points of articulation (PoA) for a full line of action figures where you’re only creating new versions of existing characters may not be the best way to go about it.  Hasbro was already reducing PoA on their Clone Wars line, which I feel suffered an unnecessary cancellation, where it seemed to be working, but to come out with a new Saga Legends line to tackle Saga characters?  Throwing in Anakin, meaning they’re tripling up on him this Fall, along with Yoda and a Super Battle droid, which already have some basic articulated versions, may not be the best choices for launch.

I will give them this; the new Saga Legends look, and according to Hasbro, feel, like the vintage Kenner toys a lot of us grew up with.  They do look to be sculpted well and as long as they make decent toys, there could be a market for them.  Even with assembly costs rising, Hasbro already has quite a few figure versions available to them that feature fewer points of articulation and I have to wonder why they don’t try to leverage those before investing in brand new sculpts and tooling.

Also, the 12″ line of Hasbro Star Wars figures?  Completely unnecessary.  There’s no argument for them.

What They Said

I reached out to Friend of the Holocron, Bill Cable, of CreatureCantina.com to get his take on what he saw at this year’s show.  I asked him what he thought were the one best and one worst Hasbro offerings and one best and one worst offerings from any license, any company at Toy Fair.

Tamashii Nations C-3PO with Bill CableOn the best of Hasbro:

I’ll go with the 6″ Black Sandtrooper.  Fantastic sculpt and spot-on deco.  Looks gorgeous in person.  Runner up would be the LEGENDS 4″ figures, just because they turned out way better than I expected and they really take me back to Vintage toys.

On the worst of Hasbro:

The LEGENDS 12″ figures are awful. Even the Hasbro guys were making excuses.  ”Intended for foreign markets” and such.

On the best of Toy Fair:

No question there: Tamashii Nations Perfect Model 3PO.  When they say perfect they mean it.  It’s the most amazingly crafted Star Wars toy I’ve ever laid eyes on.

On the worst of Toy Fair:

Now that is a tough one.  I mean, the 12″ LEGENDS figures are right up there… but it feels like a cop-out to go with that.  There were these awful rectangle face-shaped soft zipper pencil case-type things where the zipper made a mouth and you could pull a tongue out sometimes.  But the “flesh” of the face was all stretched out and folded kinda like something you’d see in Hellraiser.  They were intended to be “gross” and were really just ugly. I can’t imagine anyone ever buying one. I didn’t get the name though, so that’s probably not very helpful.

Toy Fair – Hasbro 12″ Figures

It was a surprise when, last year, Hasbro announced that they’d be bringing a low priced 12″ line to retail in 2013 but two of the figures, Anakin and the Clone Trooper, have already shown up in stores.  With an MSRP of only $9.99 and 5 points of articulation, the figures have their iconic weapons but they’re molded into their hands.

Joining Anakin and the Trooper will be Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi, due later this year, and a deluxe set, Anakin to Darth Vader.

The Anakin to Darth Vader set will be priced at $24.99 and includes electronics featuring movie phrases, sound effects and, depending on which outfit he’s wearing, a lightsaber that will change colors from blue to red.  The deluxe set is slated for a Fall release.

Toy Fair – Hasbro Mission Series

Continuing with their new low priced, less articulation strategy, Hasbro introduced a new line of 2-packs called Mission Series.  Featuring figures similar to the new Legends Line, each set will retail for $9.99.

The sets shown off this weekend include Darth Vader & Seeker Droid, Anakin Skywalker & 501st Clone Trooper, Jango Fett & Battle Droid and a 212th Clone Trooper & Battle Droid.

Shown in the booth with the sets mentioned above were R2-D2 & C-3PO and Captain Rex & Battle Droid.  Although they were displayed with the other Mission Series figures, we don’t have any additional info at this time as to whether or not they’re planned for a second wave or just displayed where they fit on the shelves.  It’s notable that the Rex and R2 were Clone Wars sculpts.  We’ll try to track down more info on them.

Toy Fair – Hasbro Saga Legends

Saga Legends EpIII YodaIt’s a trend that Hasbro and other companies, notably Mattel, have been going back to fewer points of articulation in order to bring lower action figure prices to retail stores.  We’d already seen this from Hasbro with last year’s G.I. Joe vehicle drivers and early photos of this year’s Spider-Man and Iron Man figures, and it tracked that we would see it eventually in the Star Wars line.

Eventually was this weekend.  Hasbro unveiled the replacement line for Movie Heroes, going back to the Saga Legends name, and brought out a whole wave of newly sculpted figures with 5 points of articulation.  The look and “feel” of the line is very vintage Kenner and although we never like to lose advances such as innovative wrist joints and other well-hidden articulation, we have to admit that these figures look quite well done.

Priced at a reasonable $5.99, the eight figures shown off for the reborn Legends line are a good mix of Prequel Trilogy characters that seem to be targeted at kids and entry level collectors.  With the Black Series, Hasbro is directly targeting the more hardcore collector but we think a few of these figures may find their way into their hands as well.

Toy Fair – Hasbro Exclusives

Some of the biggest news out of yesterday’s presentation may be the upcoming store exclusives.  Hasbro is releasing four large vehicles to Toys-R-Us and, in a first, Amazon, all in Vintage Collection packaging.  Target and KMart get in on the game with figure packs and, as we mentioned earlier, SDCC will have a Black Series Boba Fett and Han Solo in Carbonite.

No photos of the KMart or SDCC sets were posted so we’ll cover them at a later date.  Hasbro didn’t release pricing for the vehicles but did mention that the Slave I was planned for under $100.  Based on their track records, we’d expect Amazon to be close to Hasbro’s MSRP while Toys-R-Us will probably add a premium to their two exclusives.

Toys-R-Us

X-Wing Republic Gunship

Toys-R-Us will have Biggs Darklighters X-Wing Fighter which will be based on the upgraded mold most recently used in their Trench Run exclusive.  The vintage Kenner X-Wing actually has the markings for Biggs so the recreation of the box art comes with built-in synergy.

Also on tap for later in the year will be one of our favorites, the Republic Gunship.  While the other vehicles will be on their own, the Gunship is scheduled to come with Yoda, a Clone Trooper and Clone Pilot, along with the gun pods on the side.  Previously only available individually in a Battle Pack, the gun pods add a lot to the playability of this set.  The photo seems to show the new 5 points of articulation figures but we’ll be looking for more news on the specifics later.

Amazon

Slave I TIE Interceptor

Teased at the end of the Celebration VI presentation, the Slave I will make an appearance this year, now sporting The Empire Strikes Back color scheme.  A Han Solo in Carbonite will be included and, as mentioned, the set will come in a Vintage Collection box.

The TIE Interceptor rounds out the Amazon exclusives and will make a good companion piece to the X-Wing.

Online

Vader Evolution

The final store exclusive is a four figure Evolutions pack of Anakin Skwalker, featuring a figure from each of the Prequel Trilogy movies and one from the Original Trilogy, as Darth Vader, in the full armored outfit.

Target

Vader Origins

We’ve updated to correct some misinformation we posted earlier.  The Evolutions set of Anakin Skywalker, above, will be an Online exclusive.  This second set, Birth of Darth Vader, will be a Target exclusive and will have Darth Vader, Palpatine, Shocktrooper and Chopper Droid.
