What would a report on New York Comic Con be without a cosplay post?  Worthless, mostly.  There were so many costumes running around the Javits Center that you could literally spend all day doing nothing but taking pictures of them.

The Avengers were very popular this year but so were Superman, Batman and Spider-Man along with Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy and a huge amount of Anime characters that I’m not familiar with.  Oh, and zombies.  Zombies everywhere almost all weekend.

Del Rey was promoting the upcoming “Scoundrels” book along with the newly announced “Kenobi,” from John Jackson Miller.

DK had their new “The Old Republic: Encyclopedia” on display along with their books on Lego and other topics.

Random House had signings throughout the weekend at their booth, including Pablo Hidalgo, Timothy Zahn and Jason Fry.

I took a lot of miscellaneous photos over the weekend but some don’t need their own post and that includes Super 7, Mattel and Mega Bloks.

The area around the Mattel booth was so crowded it was hard to get in to snap any pictures so I just got a few random shots of some Masters of the Universe stuff along with Batman.

Super 7 was showing off their Star Wars wallpaper and had info on their two Star Wars Shogun Warriors, Boba Fett and Stormtrooper, along with the proposed line of vintage Kenner style Alien action figures.

The Mega Bloks booth was up front near Mattel and also was hard to navigate.  You’ll see some photos of the cool Halo display but they were also showing off some interesting World of Warcraft toys as well.  There was a giant display of a character from WoW and a small diorama in the front hallway but if the floor was too crowded, the front hall was overrun.

Hallmark BoothHallmark attended New York Comic Con again this year and brought along a couple exclusive ornaments.  For Star Wars, the shared exclusive was the 4-LOM and Zuckuss bounty hunter set.  Limited to 1,800 pieces, the ornament was also offered at San Diego Comic-Con.  They also offered a Battlestar Galactica Cylon and The Dark Knight Returns Batman.

They showed off new 2013 ornaments along with currently available items such as the newly released Darth Vader Peekbuster.  They even had a Santa Vader attend the show so that fans could have a photo taken with him.

Hallmark also teamed up with Marvel to help wish Spider-Man a happy 50th birthday by trying to break a Guinness World Record for “Most Contributions to a Greeting Card.”  Attendees could sign a sticker that was then applied to the 6′ by 8′ birthday card.  Friend of the Holocron, Joe K, and I signed but not word yet on if they were able to break the record.

Kotobukiya Booth at New York Comic ConKotobukiya brought a large booth to New York Comic Con this year, showing off Star Wars, Marvel, Mass Effect, DC and other licenses.  Their Bishoujo Statue line always impresses but I think the R2-D2 and Han Solo in Carbonite business card holders.

They were also showing off the larger deluxe silicon ice trays of the Millennium Falcon, Han in Carbonite and R2-D2.

At this year’s New York Comic Con there was an entire side of the show floor set aside for the vinyl and pop culture artists called The Block.  Onell Design, makers of the excellent Glyos line of action figures and toys, had a booth in The Block that they shared with several other artists, toy manufacturers and customizers over the weekend.

I stopped by several times to take in all the cool stuff being shown but what I was really there for were the sneak peeks at the upcoming Pheyden, Crayboth and Armovor drops.  While I missed out on the Armorvors, apparently they sold instantly every time they hit the table, I did catch a snapshot of the Crayboth and Pheyden figures.  Also out were a few of the Task Force Volkriun Division Armored Rigs and Armodoc figures along with some custom Buildman figures and a Core Block or two.  There was even a strawberry scented Callgrim figure offered up.

For those that missed out on any of the three debuts, this Saturday is when the drop is scheduled.  Keep an eye on the Onell Design blog for times.

Lego had a large booth at this year’s New York Comic Con and they were especially showing off their new Lord of the Rings and Hobbit toys along with the newly announced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  They showed off a couple of new sets including the The Bat vs Bane Tumbler Chase set and were giving away TMNT minifigs via raffle.  The exclusive for the show was a Luke Skywalker and Landspeeder tin which was limited to 1,000 pieces and sold for $40.

The booth was crowded all weekend long so it was hard to get good photos of some of the displays but the large Gandalf, Bilbo and Hulk were all very cool.

Minimates Panel PresentersI’ll be the first to admit that I don’t know a lot about the Minimates line.  I know enough to recognize all the properties they cover and how many series have been released, but the details of show and store exclusives, colorways and what constitutes news or a reveal is lost on me.  But the Minimates panel, hosted by Zach Oat, at New York Comic Con this past weekend was still fun.

They showed off a lot of slides of new and upcoming figures and some, like the Battle Beasts, are really cool.  I photographed as much of the panel as possible but did miss a couple of slides as they were going kind of quick in places.  There was a Minimates museum display at the show but I don’t seem to have taken any photos of it.  However, some of the upcoming toys can be seen in the shots I took at the Diamond Select booth.   Hopefully there’s something interesting in these shots.

New York Comic Con – Toy Hunter Panel

Toy Hunter PanelOn Saturday afternoon I attended the Toy Hunter panel which featured Jordan Hembrough, of Hollywood Heroes, and two of the show runners from the Travel Channel, including producer Stone Roberts.  If you have not yet seen the Toy Hunter, it’s a half hour show that follows Jordan around the country as he sources rare and collectible toys that he will later sell in his online store or at events such as New York Comic Con.

The panel started off with Jordan explaining the concept of the show and a little history about himself.  He started Hollywood Heroes in 1995 but has been buying and selling toys at toy shows and events since he was a teenager.  Hollywood Heroes really got its start when, after Starlog magazine closed their chain of stores, Jordan, who had been a buyer for the company, was able to purchase the clearance stock from the Starlog stores.

Toy Hunter, which aired it’s original pilot on January 15, 2012, enjoyed enough success that a 13 episode season 1 was ordered by the Travel Channel.  After a successful run, the series has now been picked up for a second season of 13 episodes.

A good portion of the panel involved questions from the audience.  When asked how Jordan finds his leads he said that many come from write-ins, he receives over 500 emails a day.  According to Jordan and the Travel Channel reps, they start out by asking what the potential sellers may have and whether or not they are willing to sell.  They also look for multiple contacts in an area so that they can make one trip with multiple stops to help make it worth the cost of travel.

Jordan was asked what his most exciting find was and it was the Jurassic Park prototypes he discovered during the Prehistoric Pennsylvania episode.  The prototypes were sourced from a Kenner employee and the find included two unproduced toys.

One audience member asked Jordan if he’d ever opened any high end collectibles and he has, he’s opened some carded Mego figures to display on his desk.

When asked what the most bizarre find was, Jordan brought up his stop in Ashland, NC during the Rise of Ashland episode.  He visited with twins who owned a trailer that they had added multiple rooms to.  Each room was filled with toys from all different lines and eras but the bizarre part came when he found toys stored in a clothes dryer that wasn’t in service.

Lego is a very popular toy line and hasn’t been covered in the show yet, when asked if that was a possibility, both Jordan and Stone said that we would see bricks in a future episode.

An interesting topic came up with the question of how someone would obtain a prototype for a toy.  Jordan had been a buyer for Starlog and in the 90′s salesmen still took samples with them to help sell their items.  Quite often they were prototypes that the salesmen ended up keeping.  Sculptors and designers from companies also quite often kept the protos for toys they were working on.  Networking with these people has helped Jordan and others to uncover these protos over the years.

A popular question for collectors is the “burning house” situation; if your house were burning, what one item from your collection would you grab on your way out.  Assuming the family and pets were all safe, Jordan would grab his childhood toys.

Jordan was asked if there were any toy lines that were undervalued and he thought Strawberry Shortcake and 1980′s Barbie were undervalued because there wasn’t a collector base for them.

One of the interesting questions that came up was why did Travel Channel pick up Toy Hunter?  Part of it was that there is travel involved, Jordan will even be taking the show international in the future, but it’s also focused on people and their stories which is part of the Travel Channel’s new focus for the future of their brand.

Another fun question that was asked was if there were any toys that Jordan didn’t want or had a bad “vibe” from.  His response was Kenner’s Hugo Man of a Thousand Faces and Teddy Ruxpin.

There were a few other questions about the types of toys that were favorites of the panelists (Star Wars and Mego were mentioned), whether video games will be covered in future episodes (they will) and if NASCAR collectibles were considered “toys” (yes, Winner’s Circle was mentioned).

Overall, the panel was fun and some of the stories that Jordan had to share about filming the show were enjoyable.  Much of the panel was made up of question and answer but there were a couple of clips from the show that were shown near the beginning.  It’s easy to tell that Jordan has a passion for toys and I can’t wait to see the rest of the first season and what they have in store for the second.

It’s no secret we love Lego and always look forward to seeing what the local Lego Users Groups offer up at conventions such as Wizard World, Celebration and New York Comic Con.  The display at this year’s New York Comic Con wasn’t huge but it was very impressive.  The I LUG New York Lego Users Group had three large pieces representing the Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and a combo piece for Marvel and DC superheroes.

The Star Wars section included a Death Star Trench and Hoth hanger and battlefield and were similar to ones we’ve seen before at Celebration.  The Hoth display featured a couple moving parts, the “flying” Snowspeeder and a rotating turret.  Even the Starship Enterprise made an appearance in the display.  We shot a little video of the displays and may upload that to our YouTube channel later.
