Disney Droid Factory Expansion

WDW Droid FactoryLast year’s launch of the Droid Factory feature at Hollywood Studios in Orlando, FL was one of our top stories for the year and delivered some of the most interesting collectibles of 2012.  One downside to the attraction was that it required a ticket into the park as it was located in the Tatooine Traders store.

No more.  The Droid Factory is now part of Once Upon a Toy which is located in Downtown Disney and doesn’t require a ticket to be accessed.  From the photo, which was posted by Attractions Magazine, it appears that the station is now four-sided which allows more room for fans to build their Astromech droids.

According to their twitter feed, Attractions Magazine is saying that there are no new parts available yet but it’s been heavily rumored that Disney may be adding or swapping out new colors as we move forward.

It also seemed to be just a formality that Droid Factory hadn’t yet been added to Disneyland but YakFace.com, today, is reporting via EndorExpress.net that this expansion is finally done.

While we’re hoping for new droid parts in the future, and welcome the free access, we do hope that parts will be the same between the two parks and that there won’t be exclusives only available on one coast or the other.

The Future of Star Wars: Where Do We Go From Here?

Star Wars Gold Logo 200x92With the announcement yesterday that Star Wars: The Clone Wars would not be going forward on Cartoon Network, it seems that the franchise we all love has been taking some big hits.  As of Star Wars Celebration VI, last August, there were several promises for 2013 that looked to make this a banner year for fans of the franchise.

Then in October it was announced that Disney would be purchasing Lucasfilm for $4 billion dollars and things seem to have come to a screeching halt.

With the purchase of Lucasfilm, Disney announced that a new trilogy would begin in 2015 with Star Wars Episode VII.  While that trilogy would tie into the existing Saga, we’d also see standalone films that would run parallel to the expanding Saga.  But what did that mean for the existing franchises and those that had just been announced?

At Celebration VI it was announced that the 3D releases of both Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith would be coming in the fall of 2013.  The first hint that something was changing behind the scenes came when the dates for the 3D releases were shuffled to bring them closer together.  Then, on January 28th, both releases were cancelled.

Also on January 28th, Cartoon Network announced their fall 2013 schedule and Star Wars: The Clone Wars was not on it.  At the time the speculation was that Disney would want to pull the show over to one of their existing networks such as Disney XD.  It seemed like coincidence at the time, but now it seems possible that the fate of the Clone Wars was determined at the same time as that of the 3D releases, many of us just didn’t want to see it.

Besides The Clone Wars, yesterday’s StarWars.com article also brings up Star Wars: Detours and that it has been postponed. The animated show, from the creators of Robot Chicken, was first shown off at Celebration VI and was slated to hit the airwaves this year.  According to a post on twitter from Seth Green, the show is on hold but “Don’t fear, you’ll see it when the timing’s right.”  Still, that sounds less than promising for any type of weekly show.

LucasArts first showed off Star Wars: 1313 at E3 and then during Celebration VI, it had a lot of buzz coming out of the convention, but there have been little or no updates since.  The official website has been quiet as has the Facebook page where the only posts seem to be from fans asking for, well, anything to indicate that the project is still moving forward.  There’s been such little information that Stephen Totilo over at Kotaku wrote an article about it back on February 28th titled “The Strange Status of Star Wars 1313, A Hot Game with an Uncertain Future.”  With more adult themes, and set between Episodes III and IV, 1313 would take a look at the criminal underground on Coruscant.  That’s not necessarily the most family friendly video game.  Could Disney have cancelled or at least postponed the game?  With no evidence to the contrary, it seems possible.

When it comes to collecting, Hasbro had already been slowing down the Clone Wars line of toys and action figures, and even though they showed off new releases for this year, it was thought that we were seeing the final waves of animated action figures.   Now, looking at January 28th with new 20/20 hindsight, it makes more sense why Hasbro has cancelled nearly everything they showed at San Diego Comic-Con and Celebration VI, replacing them with toy lines that we had no notice of until February’s Toy Fair.

But where does that leave us going forward?  While, on one hand, we’ve been told it’s going to be business as usual at Lucasfilm, it’s hard to trust that at this point.

We have to wonder about Dark Horse Comics and how long they may be in the Star Wars business.  Since Disney owns Marvel Comics there are some (including us) that think it’s inevitable and only a matter of time before Dark Horse will have to give up the reins to the comic book license.  This would be familiar territory for Disney who ended a two year partnership with BOOM! Studios in favor of publishing their IP comics with Marvel.  For his part, Dark Horse President Mike Richardson announced back in October that “Star Wars will be with us for the near future.”  There are two new titles scheduled to come from Dark Horse this year but depending on when their current license runs out, we’d bet on hearing something from Disney soonish.  After all, we’d assume Disney would be looking at comic tie-ins to the new movies and that could be a good jumping on point for Marvel to take over.

What about the fans?  Celebration Europe II is coming up in July and based on a rumor from last year, we were kind of expecting an announcement for Celebration VII in 2014 during that event.  Could that be out of the question now?  It would seem that if a three convention deal had already been in place for Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center, which is what the rumor was, it would probably go forward but the Disney acquisition throws everything into question.  Could Star Wars Celebrations be cancelled or, at least, on hold until closer to the Episode VII release?  One of the major guest announcements for CEII has been Dave Filoni.  We wonder, with the cancellation of The Clone Wars, how his attendance will be affected and if it’ll have any effect on the mood of the show.

Even though Filoni mentioned in his video to fans that important Clone Wars stories were still “coming your way,” we have no indication yet of how or when that will happen.  With the ending, for now, of The Clone Wars and the postponement of Detours, that means we’ll have a period of time leading into Episode VII with no ongoing television series.  It seems to play into the comments that Robert Iger made about not over commercializing Star Wars.  If Disney takes a less is more approach over the next two years, it could help to make the new theatrical movies feel fresh.

Right now, it’s a very transitional period for Star Wars fans.  Even without new feature films, we had an idea of where things were heading in the gaming market, with books and comics and an ongoing television series.  With Disney now at the helm, nothing is certain.  We’ve seen several cancellations, postponements and possible delays all within the span of two months and it’s starting leave a sour taste.  We’ve certainly seen some of the early praise for Disney erode; it’s always easier to see what you’ve just lost rather than what you could gain in the future.

One thing is for certain, many fans want to see positive movement and they want to see it soon.

Disney Acquires Lucasfilm Ltd.

George Lucas Robert Iger Disney LucasfilmSo, yesterday, a bomb got dropped on us; George Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney for over $4 billion dollars. Industrial Light and Magic, Skywalker Sound, LucasArts, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and all other properties owned by Lucasfilm now reside in the House of the Mouse.

What does that mean for us? Right off the bat we can look forward to Star Wars Episodes 7, 8 and 9 beginning in 2015, with the possibility of more films every two to three years. It could mean that The Clone Wars will have a home on one of Disney’s channels and that we can expect Star Wars games to go social and mobile.

Hasbro has an excellent relationship with Disney and with their contract for Star Wars already extended out to 2020, we can expect a long life for the action figures. Other license holders? Not sure, yet, but there are some licensees that compete with Disney, Dark Horse, for example, that will have to be reconciled at some point in the future. It’s possible that we’ll see a pullback initially, and then more product when it comes movie release time.

Kathleen Kennedy, recently promoted by George to Co-Chair of Lucasfilm, will have a job at Disney as President of Lucasfilm. Howard Roffman, who transitioned from President of Lucas Licensing to Senior Advisor will be coming back as Franchise Manager and Rick McCallum, who produced the prequel trilogy, has retired.

Disney will be looking to increase the Star Wars presence in their parks and it would be my hope they’d want to keep future Celebrations in Orlando which would help funnel business to the parks in a cross promotion.

So, what do I think of this? My initial reaction is that I don’t like it. Do I think Disney will somehow ruin Star Wars? No. But having grown up with Star Wars, for good or bad, it’s always been George Lucas’ vision that keeps me interested. Although he should have some input into the future films, they will have a new vision that’s as yet untested.

Still, I can’t help but be a little excited to see what other directors could do with a Star Wars film. Spielberg (even though he’s said he doesn’t want to do more action films)? Whedon? Favreau?  Even though Lucasfilm has it’s own animation segment, could we see a Pixar take on our favorite heroes?  Time will tell.

Disney Droid FactoryIt was a successful day at Disney and the Celebration VI festivities are starting to roll.

We arrived around 2:30 this afternoon and after checking into the hotel, headed to Disney Hollywood Studios for 6 hours of magic.  Although it was raining, we were able to see the Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show before heading over to the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular.

Following dinner at the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater, we made it just in time to see the final show of The American Idol Experience.  Not being a big fan of American Idol, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I enjoyed the show.

After American Idol, it was finally time for our first ride on the new Star Tours ride.  Having read about all the new features, I was excited to see the ride and was really impressed with all of the upgrades.  We rode twice and both times went to Kashyyyk before landing on Coruscant the first time and Naboo the second.

Of course, after riding, we had to stop and build some droids at the Droid Factory station in Tatooine Traders.  I built two my first time through, using some of the new parts that debuted when the station reopened a few weeks ago.  On my second trip, which was near closing, I was able to build three using a mix of parts.  While speaking to the crew member working the Droid Factory, it sounded as if they were already running short on some parts again and I didn’t see a few of the new domes I was looking for.  We did find out that Droid Factory should be a permanent attraction so parts should be replenished.

After the first ride on Star Tours, we went and watched the 3D Muppet show and then headed for the Great Movie Ride.  We ended up not riding that, however, after the line started to back up.  It was already 9:00 and with only an hour left, we wanted to get that second Star Tours ride in as well as do some shopping.

We walked out of the park right at 10:00 so we took advantage of the whole after 4:00 tickets.  It was a quick yet fun trip to Disney and I’m glad we fit it in ahead of Celebration.  It seems like a missed opportunity that there was no Disney event in conjunction with Celebration, but it was easy enough to make it work.  Tomorrow, Universal Studios.

It’s been a week since the new Droid Factory attraction opened at Tatooine Traders in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, but we can’t get enough and neither can Disney, apparently. Yesterday they posted a new video to their YouTube channel. Hosted by John, the video features Disney Parks toy designers Brad and Cody, and a couple other special guests. It’s a fun video and really gives you a first hand look at the Droid Factory and all the parts available.

Here are some details on the droids.

  • There are approximately 71 pieces including:
    • Domes
    • Bodies
    • Legs: left, right and center
    • Themed hats
  • Droids are priced at $11.95 for one or two for $18.95

  • Sticker sheets with letters, numbers and symbols are available at checkout so you can name your droids and customize the packaging
  • R6, R8 & R9 droid domes are exclusive to Disney

Carbon-Freeze Me
Carbon-Freeze Me

Back when rumors of the Disney Build-a-Droid program were leaking out, another promotion for Star Wars Weekends was also mentioned; custom action figures that you could buy with your likeness on them. Now, StarWars.com has posted information about this program called Carbon-Freeze Me.

Starting during Star Wars Weekends, on May 18th, you can reserve a spot to have your face scanned and your likeness will be added to an 8-inch tall figure frozen in carbonite, just like Han Solo from The Empire Strikes Back. To order one figure it will be $99.95 but additional figures can be ordered for $74.95. The package also includes a light-up wristband with the Imperial logo on it.

Full details, including the number to call for a scanning reservation, can be found on StarWars.com. Registration opened yesterday.
