Fast & Furious 6

Fast & Furious 6If you told me in 2001, as I was sitting in the theater watching The Fast and the Furious, that I would be sitting in another theater 12 years later watching the sixth installment of the “franchise” I would have called bullshit.

If you had also told me that the sixth film in the series would do a better job of tying up all the loose ends created by the first four (sometimes disparate) movies than a series such as Star Wars, I probably would have given you a verbal smack down.

2001 version of me was such an ass.

Tonight, not only was I sitting in a theater watching what’s become one of my favorite movie series, I also witnessed it come full circle, returning, at times, to the heart of the story that I loved so much the first time; family.

Family was once again a major theme in Furious 6 and it was better for it because, let’s be honest upfront, the action sequences towards the end were so over the top that it nearly ruined an otherwise fun movie for me.

With two exceptions, the cast of Fast 5 was back; Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, The Rock, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot and Elsa Pataky.  Gina Carano joined the movie as Hobbs’ (The Rock) partner, Luke Evans took a spin as the villain, Shaw, and Michelle Rodriguez was back as Letty, a plot point spoiled in the trailers so I don’t feel bad mentioning it.

Letty wasn’t the only familiar face from the past to return, but I’m going to hold onto a couple of those mentions because you should find them for yourselves.  Let’s just say that between a well-done montage of the previous five films, during the opening credits, a couple of flashback sequences and those cameos, Furious 6 added a certain cohesiveness to the franchise that’s quite often missing in a series of this type.

Furious 6 takes place about a year after Fast 5 and the main story is that Hobbs, in an attempt to capture the outlaw Shaw, calls on Dom and his team for an assist.  The payoff for the help; full pardons all around and the chance to reconnect with Letty.

Unlike some of the previous films, there was no heist for our favorite team of outlaws to plan, instead they were playing the role of the police and the overall plot may have suffered a little for it.  Making up for it were several hilarious moments, usually at the expense of Gibson’s Roman, and plenty of car action.  The other highlights, for me, were the two scenes where Carano’s Riley went at it with Letty.  Although the choreography was decent for those two fights, the quick-cut edits kept them from rising to the level of Carano’s turn in last year’s Haywire.

The two biggest problems for me were the last two big action pieces towards the end of the movie.  The first, on a freeway in Spain, included a tank and one of the most ridiculous rescue stunts I’ve ever seen outside of a superhero movie.  Topping it, however, was the plane chase…who knew they built 30 mile long runways on military bases.  Uh, that’s all I can say about that.

Putting Dom’s team on the side of the law for Furious 6 was an interesting spin and I thought that it generally worked, even if I did miss them not being in on a heist.  Putting the family aspect back at the heart of the film restored one of the strengths of the The Fast and the Furious and helped ground the movie, which it needed with all of the action surrounding it.

There’s a pretty big twist in the movie that caught me off guard and we are also treated to a bonus scene, during the credits, that sets up the already announced Fast & Furious 7.  The only hint I’ll give you is that it will transport you to a wider world.  Don’t cheat and look it up on IMDB.

The Fast & Furious franchise is not Shakespeare and it’s not going to win an Oscar, but it’s flat out fun to watch.  Plus, Gina Carano, amirite!  The car chases and several of the fight sequences were well done, plenty of humor, at times the movie got back to its roots and the ending was both (mostly) satisfying and exciting.  I have to knock off some points for that plane chase though, no way around it.  I would have also liked to have seen a couple of the fights play out more fluidly, you’ve got the Rock and Gina Carano for shit’s sake, that’s what they do.  I was happy to see Vin Diesel return to the Dominic Toretto that launched the series and made the character so interesting a decade ago.  Having Michelle Rodriguez back to play opposite him added the perfect topping.

Had the action sequences been a little less fanciful, Fast & Furious 6 could have easily gained a full point on my rating scale, still, three wheels of cheddar out of five.  If you like this franchise, or just want some fun without thinking too hard, you’ll enjoy it.

The LEGO Group unveils world’s largest LEGO® model

More than five million LEGO bricks used to create life-sized X-Wing starfighter in celebration of new LEGO Star Wars animated TV special “The Yoda™ Chronicles” premiering on Cartoon Network

The LEGO Group today unveiled the world’s largest LEGO model, a 1:1 replica of the LEGO® Star Wars™ X-Wing starfighter, in New York’s Times Square. To celebrate the upcoming premiere of The Yoda Chronicles on Cartoon Network on Wednesday, May 29 at 8:00 p.m. (ET, PT), the massive replica took 32 master builders, five million LEGO bricks and over 17,000 hours to complete. The model weighs nearly 20,865 kilograms, stands 3.35 meters tall and 13.1 meters long, with a wingspan of 13.44 meters. The Model will “take off” for a summer landing at LEGOLAND® California Resort where it will be installed through the remainder of the year.

“Just as kids love to test and hone their LEGO building skills and imaginative storytelling, our LEGO Master Builders are always testing their creative skills to top their last larger-than-life sized creations,” said Michael McNally, Brand Relations Director for LEGO Systems.  “The size and structural complexity of a freestanding model 42 times the size of one our retail sets was a challenge they could not resist.”

LEGO Star Wars is the original and most successful licensed product collection in The LEGO Group’s history and remains among the best-selling global toy lines. The theme’s evergreen strength comes from its appeal across generations to fans of all ages and a steady introduction of digital content such as The Yoda Chronicles to compliment the building experience.

“Much the same way that fans can build the Star Wars universe with our LEGO sets, we are fortunate to work with Lucasfilm to build new stories, characters and vehicles through one-of-a-kind content such as the new  “Yoda Chronicles” miniseries launching on Cartoon Network,” said Nicholas Hort, LEGO Star Wars brand manager.

Star Wars Gold Logo 200x92Fans of the animated Star Wars tales take note, 2014 will see the debut of the next animated series, Star Wars Rebels.  Set between Episode III and IV, Rebels will follow the Empire as it hunts down the last of the Jedi and tries to suppress the growing rebellion.

Dave Filoni will be on board as executive producer while Simon Kinberg and Greg Weisman join the franchise.  Weisman worked on “Young Justice” which was an excellent series.

The new show will debut with a one hour premier episode on the Disney Channel and then move to Disney XD on a weekly basis.  A preview of the show will be shown at Star Wars Celebration Europe which is coming up in July.

This announcement comes on the heels of the new domain names that Lucasfilm registered earlier in the month and the tease, by Filoni, about drawing a TIE Fighter for the first time.  Now that we know where the Rebels name is being used, we can’t wait to hear what the Wolf Pack domains are destined for!

Head over to StarWars.com for the full announcement of Star Wars Rebels.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Coming This Fall

Starting with Iron Man, Marvel has unleashed five year’s worth of incredible superhero movies on the world, culminating in last year’s Avengers and heading into phase 2 with Iron Man 3 which released this month.

Keeping the momentum alive, this fall, on ABC, we’ll be treated to “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” a new drama that will follow Agent Phil Coulson, played by Clark Gregg, and a group of agents as they investigate newly identified superheroes.

Ming-Na and J. August Richards, along with a young cast of relative newcomers, make an appearance in the pilot and can be seen in the trailer below.

Although I haven’t gone through all of the Upfronts yet, “Agents of SH.I.E.L.D.” looks to be about the best new offering of any network so far.  It promises action, superhero appearances and more of Agent Coulson’s humor that made him a fan favorite in the movies that spawned this series.

As a side note, I’ve never been a huge fan of Ming-Na, maybe it was the characters she played, but she looks ridiculously hot in this trailer while kicking some serious ass.  Also, she’s gonna be 50 this year so, right on!

If you haven’t seen it yet, check out the trailer below and get ready to tune in on Tuesdays this fall.

Star Trek Into Darkness

Star Trek Into DarknessCan you call a movie “Into Darkness” when it has that much lens flare?

Well, yes, when the darkness in question refers to the darkness in men’s hearts, the darkest hour, the darkness of cold and lonely space and the darkness that can swallow a soul bent on revenge.

Star Trek Into Darkness returns Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk to the command chair of the Enterprise in what turns out to be a new telling of an older, classic Star Trek tale which, if you haven’t read about, won’t be fully explained here.

All of the main cast from 2009′s Star Trek returns for Into Darkness; Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Anton Yelchin can all be found on the bridge while Bruce Greenwood is back as Admiral Pike.  Joining the fun; Alice Eve as Carol, Peter Weller as Admiral Marcus and Benedict Cumberbatch as John Harrison.

While the main story of Into Darkness revolves around the crew of the Enterprise trying to stop a terrorist who has blown up a Starfleet base, there’s a more personal story surrounding Kirk, who finally needs to face the reality of sitting in the Captain’s chair.  He believes that the rules don’t apply to him, that his intelligence, his daring and his sense of loyalty to his crew and his friends will allow him to always win the unwinnable situation, no matter how much he tramples the Prime Directive or dismisses his orders or  how much danger he places himself in.

So what happens when he meets a villain that is also willing to do what it takes to protect his people, to take any risk necessary to dispatch those he feels beneath him or who, at any given time may, in fact, be the smartest, strongest man in the room?

As far as necessary.

Into Darkness, like its 2009 predecessor, is full of action, outrageous stunts and plenty of humor.  There are nods to the classic Trek television show and previous films and while we’re still living in the new timeline created by J.J. Abrams, it’s familiar, comfortable and yet still interesting to watch.

The film does have a few issues; as a friend pointed out, there are a few places where certain things happen in the plot only to put the characters in a specific situation for some over the top action or to force a character to make a certain decision.  But the payoff is usually worth it.

The acting is mostly solid with everyone bringing their A game, but the seriousness in a few scenes does bring out some overacting.  Hey, it’s not like William Shatner didn’t do that a time or 10.

Star Trek Into Darkness looks incredible, whether it’s on a practical set, an alien planet or just a look around futuristic versions of London and San Francisco.  I did not see the movie in 3D but there are a few scenes where I’m sure it would have looked exceptional.  I think I’d still recommend seeing it in 2D because, ultimately, you want to see this movie for the story as much as the visuals.

At the end of the day, Star Trek Into Darkness is a classic Trek story, reimagined to fit in the new reality created by J.J. Abrams and his team of writers.  It’s fast paced, has lots of action, a little classic Trek science and ultimately pays off with an enjoyable movie, satisfying ending and open possibilities for future movies.

I’ll give Star Trek Into Darkness 4.5 wheels of cheddar out of five.
