Frank Diorio has been doing diorama builds at Celebration since Celebration II in 2002. That first diorama was Tatooine and this year, for the 10th anniversary, Frank presented Return to Tatooine during Celebration VI.
Return to Tatooine is the most ambitious project yet and the layout included scenes from The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, A New Hope and Return of the Jedi. The layout included fan-built buildings, Tusken Raider camps, moisture vaporators and a Sarlaac pit. Populating the scenes were a collection of donated action figures and vehicles. A gigantic Jawa Sandcrawler anchored one corner and the other, over the Sarlaac, was to include Jabba’s Sail Barge which, unfortunately, was not completed in time to be displayed in the diorama.
Frank’s website, DioramaWorkshop.com, has additional information about all of the builds that went into the Celebration diorama, including time-lapse video of the Sandcrawler and Sail Barge builds, information on the layout and examples of the types of buildings fans could build.
We took over 80 photos of the diorama at various points in the construction and then shot a half hour long video, in two parts, of the final layout on Sunday afternoon before it was dismantled. See the video and photos below.
